Well, we did it - food finally came into the picture today. Olivia decided she no longer could go with out solid food, so we've changed from the Raw milk diet to a "raw diet."
She drank milk for the entire morning and then around 12:30 p.m. she had some dried apple slices. Throughout the afternoon she had a few nuts, almonds and walnuts. She felt so much better being able to eat something. She continued drinking alot of milk too.
For dinner she had a raw salad of lettuce, tomatoe, cucumber and walnuts. For dessert later in the evening she had a small smoothie of milk, 1/2 banana and 4 large strawberries. Her stomach again started giving her problems later in the evening, but she continued with a few more glasses of raw milk and a few almonds right before going to sleep.
Again, she did not take any insulin for the entire day.

This is the first day of week two. It was a rainy kind-of day so we didn't get to be outside again. Olivia started milk in the morning and continued throughout the day. The evening before she didn't any insulin because she was low. I had her check again before bed to make sure she wasn't too low and she was all right.
I tried to keep her occupied all day. We read alot, painted in our nature journals, played games like dutch blitz and Quidler. We learned a new game of go fish with musical composers. The trick was to keep mind off of food. She still struggled with wanting to eat something, but continued on.
All day her meter readings were very good - right on target, so she did not take any insulin for the entire day. At night her reading was quite low, so I gave her some freshly made apple juice from the juicer. It immediately sent her stomach into a pain mode - having only had milk for so long. She still had a little stomach pain when she went to bed, but then had a good night's sleep.

Today was exactly one week of the milk cure. Can it actually be a week? Well, it has been. We had to take Joel to work this morning. Olivia continued wearing her nightgown, even while laying outside on the front porch this morning while Joel and I planted some trees in the orchard.
After returning form Town, Olivia changed her clothes for the afternoon and started a knitting project of cabled fingerless gloves. She continued to work on the gloves when we went to the Furhmans for piano lessons and more milk. 5 1/2 gallons of milk came home with us. Olivia had to drink some milk right from the jar on the way home that had cream in it. She complained the entire night that the milk tasted like butter. But she finished knitting one glove and I had the car trunk hit me in the bridge of my nose real hard when getting the milk out of the trunk. After a little blood and pain, I got the milk out - having to carry two coolers to the kitchen - with Olivia's help.
Her blood sugar level was at 74 this evening, so she did not take an insulin shot before dinner - the first time in 8 months!

Today was another day. Olivia continues to take one unit of insulin, continues to drink milk, and continues continues. We had the reward of getting to this day of a new outfit at Goodwill. We slipped out of co-op during lunch and purchased a new outfit and ran back to co-op to finish.
We did a little more shopping after co-op, and visited Joel at Pyramid Pizza in Rocky Mount, then came home. She had alot of excitement today with classes and people and such, but after Mash she got her bath while I read to her from Lottie Moon and our Girlhood book and then a massage and went to bed.

Happy Monday morning. Olivia's blood sugar is now at 95. She is looking forward to that first sip of milk this morning. Joel says she should pretend her milk is watermelon juice. Do you think that is a good idea? I know she wishes it was chocolate milk for sure! Today is day number 5.
Olivia drank milk throughout the morning, taking her bath for one hour today - from 10:00-11:00. Another milk was taken at 12:30 for lunch. A project of dried beans deisgning was done after making a dried flower card for a friend to take her mind off of food.

A very difficult day. It started out OK, getting milk in the morning, dressing and off to church. But on returning from church lunch in the crockpot smelled just way too good and Olivia became very discouraged. It took all day for her to get in the right mindset to continue this day. So we're taking one day at a time.
The afternoon was short, resting, playing with kittens, taking a bath. Once I Love Lucy came on life was a little bit better for everyone!
Awana was in the evening and she even played the games. She forgot to fill her milk cup and so we had to stop at Kroger's for some Homestead Creamery milk (a little bit better than normal pasturized milk.) so that got us through church in the evening.
When we returned home Olivia got a lovely massage and we read from our biography on Lottie Moon till bed. Good Night.

A rainy, cold day for September. We had plans to spin wool at a harvest festival but they all fell through. Olivia started her milk, and basically kept milk in her cup all day and sipped throughout the day. That seems to work better.
It also seems to work better following the pound amount rather than height. We thought she'd need a quart of milk for every foot she was, but 4 quarts ended up being too much. So we went with a quart for every 25 pounds she ways. It seems a little better and more reasonable to have her drink 3 quarts a day. She interspersed laying with a movie here and there, a game of letter find and playing with the cats. It was another day of being indoors so that was bad. But there was her bath and after my nap, a massage.

Day two - how long to go? It's a rough day. Olivia is craving solid food and now hungry. She's wondering if this is all worth it.
She started drinking at 7:00 and continued at 8:00, 9:00 and 10:00 with a cup each. At 10:30 she had an hour bath and drank another cup. Her sugar was at 120 all day so that was good.
Her afternoon massage was accompanied by cups at 12:00, 1:00 and 2:00. Another cup was lingered over around 3:00. Dinner was at 6:00 and another cup was at 7:00. She's hungry now ready for bed.

Today is the day. We started the raw milk diet for Olivia's diabetes. It's been a few months reading, praying and deciding what to do. But now the time has come.
I traveled to Gretna, Our Father's Farm, for my raw milk yesterday - picking up 5 1/2 gallons of the 7 gallons needed for this week. She'll be drinking one gallon of milk per day.
The day started eventful, with 35 baby chicks coming in the mail so I had to run to the post office and pick them up first thing. I missed Olivia waking up, but she said she awoke to the phone ringing at 6a.m. anyway. When I returned from town, I got her laying down, had her check her sugar and it was at 130 to start the day, she gave herself 2 units of insulin and I gave her her first 2 cups of milk to last the first hour. After listening to Nancy Lee DeMoss at 8:30 and drinking another 2 cups, she went to the family room to watch I Love Lucy. I had to run back to town for a heat lamp so I gave her a cup to drink at 9:30. We were going to do it on the hour, but it seemed to work better taking 1 cup every half hour. She wanted a two hour break before checking her sugar at lunchtime, so we stopped drinking at 10:30 a.m.
At 10:00 she got her warm bath, only staying in the tub about 1/2 hour. I finally finished her new nightgown made out of a blue calico so she was excited to wear it and lay out on the front porch with the kittens. At 12:30 she checked her sugar and it was at 80, so we decided she should only take 1 unit of insulin for the afternoon. She drank another cup of milk at 12:30 and then one at 1:00. She fell asleep and I was cutting lawn, so she didn't get another cup until 2:30 and then I was able to give her a back massage for about 15 minutes.
A cool wind started blowing in so we came inside the family room, leaving windows and door open to have the air circulating and she was hungry, so she drank another cup of milk at 4:30, while watching a little TV. Now she is having doubts. This is really getting difficult and she wants to eat walnuts. A big bowl of buttery popcorn would even be better!
Dinner milk was at 6:00 and another cup was at 7:00 during milk. that about did it for the first day. Olivia was very tired at 9:00 and went to bed after changing to a new nightgown.
The first day has been accomplished.
